Graduate Students' Association

Welcome to the Graduate Students' Association!

Whether you are doing a PhD or are studying for a Masters you are automatically a member of the Graduate Students' Association, or the GSA. Great I hear you shout, but just what does that mean? The GSA is here to be the voice of all postgraduates at Imperial – supporting them and helping them to get the most out of their time here at Imperial. So as well as helping new postgraduates settle in, we can also provide support when things don’t go quite right with guidance and advice on any academic or welfare problems.

Get involved

The GSA is here for postgraduates and even better it’s run by postgraduates. So if you want to make a difference to postgraduate life at Imperial, whether it’s organising social events, representing the views of your research group, or editing ‘Postscript’ - the postgraduate newspaper, the GSA can help. There will be elections for the more formal positions, like treasurer or chair, at the start of term but there are always opportunities for willing volunteers to get involved.

Representing you

The ultimate aim of the GSA is to represent the views of postgraduates at Imperial – to the Union; to the College, and nationally through bodies such as the National Postgraduate Committee. This means that if you have a problem or want to see a change we can raise it at the appropriate level and get results: consistent lobbying by the GSA over the last year saw the introduction of a new Merit level for masters courses (for students starting in 2008), after students asked for it.

Social life

Throughout the year the GSA will be organising social events just for postgraduates. In the past this has been anything from networking and careers events to gig nights together with the Royal College of Art and Royal College of Music (two nearby postgraduate institutions which are very different to Imperial). But at the end of the day it’s up to you: if you have a great idea let us know and we can hep turn it into a great event.
