Media Group

Imperial is one of the few universities in the country with its own student-run newspaper, radio station and television channel. Absolutely anyone can get involved – join up and within minutes you could be presenting a show, bombarding the rest of College with the less desirable elements of your musical taste, or taking your first steps toward a career as a BBC science correspondent.

The main student media at Imperial College are housed in a purpose-built media centre in the West Wing of Beit Quad. All three run fairly high-spec facilities. IC Radio boasts two fully equipped recording studios and a massive CD library, while STOIC, the TV station, combines the facilities of a small independent production house and a live television broadcast centre.

Both radio and TV broadcast around College and over the internet, with IC Radio transmitting to the Wye campus.
If writing’s more your style, then why not contribute to Felix, the student newspaper?

It’s produced with industry standard software and brand new equipment, and is read by most students and staff at the College.
All the clubs in the Media Group are managed, run and developed by students, so there is a plethora of opportunities to develop your creative skills, management skills and technical prowess.

On a smaller scale, the Union also produces an annual arts magazine, Phoenix, providing a release for all the closet English students on campus. Recently, the Photography society transferred their facilities to the media centre, where they have a fully equipped darkroom, so you can dream of being Ansel Adams or that guy who does the shoots for page three.

With some of the oldest (and best) student media around, the opportunities are here for anyone who doesn’t fancy the traditional Imperial career paths – research, industry and the City – to escape into a more entertaining and creative world. And it’s quite fun too.
